Pizza is one of the most popular foods in the country because of how versatile it is. Yet, many people have only had one or two styles of pizza in their lives. There are so many different styles of pizza out there, which is why we have come up with a list for you to try.

Neapolitan

Neapolitan is the closest thing America has to authentic Italian pizza. Lombardi’s was the first pizzeria in America, which opened in 1905, and introduced the style. The Neapolitan consists of fresh dough, pizza sauce, and toppings of fresh mozzarella and basil— it’s best cooked in a historic coal oven.

New York

New York-style pizza is one of the most popular pizza styles in America because of its notoriety. A New York-style slice has an extremely thin crust with a puffy end and an iconic flop that those indulging use to fold it down the middle to enjoy.

Deep-Dish (Chicago)

Born in 1943, the Deep-Dish pizza would become a staple of Chicago food. Pizzeria Uno was the first to serve the heavy hitting slice. The Deep-Dish is unlike any pizza you have ever experienced—it’s cooked in a pan with dough, cheese, and sauce on the top.

Sicilian/Grandma

A Sicilian pizza is a variation of the Deep Dish, only it’s served in a rectangular shape. The style originated in Sicily, Italy, and features tomato sauce on top of the cheese as well as minimal toppings. A Grandma pie is also a popular style and very similar; however, it has a thin crust.

Detroit

Detroit-style pizza started at Buddy’s in 1946. This pizza style is similar to a flatbread and a Sicilian pie in many ways. Detroit-style pizza has a thick crust, served in rectangle slices. However, one is supposed to cook a Detroit-style twice—just like a Deep Dish, you cook the pizza with cheese and ingredients first. Then finish it off with sauce and return to the deck oven until it’s done.

Pizza Pot Pie

The Pizza Pot Pie is a cross between a Calzone and a Deep-Dish pizza. This style became famous at Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co.—they cook the pizza in a bowl with meat or vegetarian sauce, cheese, and dough on the top. The dough then rises in the oven and they finish it off with a brush of butter on top.

Grilled

Grilled pizza is a very different style of pizza because of how it’s cooked. Although it started in 1980 by the owners of Al Forno in Providence, Rhode Island, this style has grown in popularity over the years. They brush the pizza dough with oil before it’s placed on a grill. While cooking, it is turned over a couple of times. Finally, they place the sauce, ingredients, and cheese on top.
