Drink Review: Clyde May’s Alabama Style Whiskey

Clyde May’s is an Alabama-style whiskey made in Kentucky. Made with a bourbon mashbill of 55% corn, 30% rye and 15% barley, this is aged for five to six years in charred American oak barrels. The Alabama-style comes from the addition of apple juice, resulting in hints of apple and cinnamon.

The nose is pleasant with a touch of apple and vanilla. The palate is medium in texture. It’s pretty smooth, with a subtle, earthy flavor. The oak is not overpowering and the finish is clean with a gentle apple flavor.

For many, a good moonshine is not limited to the jar of cheap substance that the prohibition era produced. There are plenty of other means of producing the spirit and many have experimented and even developed their own criteria that they use for judging what is good moonshine and what is not. They may be subjective and vary from person to person, but any well made spirit was considered good moonshine, with sweetness being the hallmark of the best.

This drink contains one of the more exotic flavors of the list, the passion fruit. The passion fruit is the fruit of the Brazilian freija passion flower plant. It is used in many kinds of cooking and is now marketed widely in the United States. The drink is named for the old Brazilian municipality where it was originally grown.

Place all ingredients except passion fruit juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a Collins glass over ice. Squeeze a slice of passion fruit over the drink and drop into the drink.

A fun mixing ingredient that if you are not familiar with, is worth a try for those who have never tried this whiskey before. It’s not for everyone, as for some people, the apple flavor will be too much. The passion fruit can easily be left out of your drink, as it will not affect the taste.

This whiskey is an interesting one that tries to bring in a little outside influence to make this whiskey unique. It’s a whiskey that is a bit too sweet for some, as it is topped off with a slice of passion fruit. The result of this is that this drink could be too sweet for some. This one is definitely not for everyone.

This is one of the more traditional whiskey drinks that includes the lemon and ginger ingredients. It’s a bit different from some of the others that include a fruit more than the traditional fruit flavor that is found in some whiskey drinks. This one is good for mixing with soda as it will make a good carbonated drink.

If you like your whiskey to taste like whiskey with a bit of an added kick, then this is the one for you. The addition of chili peppers can be a real shock for some, but for those that love the kick, this is a very good whiskey drink to add to your drink collection.
